XVIII. One Final Stand for Women
Milestones:
1956 constitution vague on women's rights
DS challenges Nasser's goverment
A new constitution in 1956 was introduced in which the rights of women were ambiguous and vague. Doria said, “The constitution doesn’t clearly define complete rights of women. The promise of women’s political rights doesn’t even exist in the text of the constitution. My primary duty is to take an uncompromising stand concerning the totality of women’s political rights.” Doria challenged Nasser’s government to clearly lay out the rights of women in the constitution and take the issues facing women seriously. “Her reasoning was simple. If women had to register on electoral lists and men did not, this was unjust and illegal.” (Nelson: p. 238)
