Crackdown on political parties and freedom of the press
DS realises women's rights are not on the agenda
Doria clearly believed that the new Egypt would accommodate women and place the issues facing women at the heart of rebuilding and reforming the country. Even following a severe crackdown on freedom of the press and political parties Doria believed, “The Egyptian woman will obtain her complete political rights in the near future. I have faith that the officials have come to realize fully that allowing complete rights to Egyptian women is a correction to the situation, as there won’t be any progress for a population half of which is paralyzed and inactive. The champions of the liberation movement will not be reluctant to restore rights to people who deserve them as this is part of their mission.” How wrong time would prove her to be. Over the next three years it became quite clear to Doria that the new Egyptian republic was travelling down a path quite different to what she imagined. In shock, she commented, “Toward what abyss is my country heading?”
